SMD Enhancement Workshop

On 21st May 2009, the 2nd workshop meeting for vacationing Senior Officers was conducted by MAGMOL SHIP MANAGEMENT DIVISION. The workshop with the theme “Enhancement of Safety Operation on MOL Vessels” was fruitfully held in cooperation with MagMOL Operations Department. This program is for MAGMOL’s commitment to uplift the safety awareness and to enhance safe operation of MOL Vessels.

The workshop starts with opening remarks and welcome speech from the Director of Ship Management Division, Mr. Kenji Kawasaki. This event was significantly attended by 1 Chief Engineer, 4 Chief Officers and 8 First Engineers. This opens up a broader room for ship managers and the officers on board for more discussions on the following topics:

  1. New Poster of “Never Forget 2006”
  2. Introduce OJT Project of MOL
  3. MOL Safety Operation Campaign
  4. Using “Unified Operation Order” Give emphasis on using hand and whistle signals
  5. Anchoring operation (case studies presented Accident/Incident before/during anchoring)
  6. Loading Operation/procedures (Case study presented)
  7. Risk assessment
  8. Responsibility of each officers
  9. Communication on board and ashore
  10. Conflict Management
  11. Various Incident / Accident occurred on Board

    1. Engine failure During anchoring operation due to M.E starting system trouble
    2. Generator Engine T/C trouble (Deformation/Misalignment of compressor wheel)
    3. Damage bearing shell for windlass (proper maintenance/ greasing)
    4. No build-up of steam pressure by Aux. boiler due toclogged tubes
    5. Damage hydraulic motor for windlass
    6. Stern Tube Leaking
    7. Campaign for the elimination of Dead stock
    8. Update on Regulations

  12. Marine pollution matters (Oil and garbage) Including Emphasis on filling up oil record book and garbage record book

Before the program ends each participants was required to fill up the evaluation form and the following are the gathered feedback we received after the whole day activity:
  1. It’s good to have this kind of refresher’s course and reminders to avoid accidents and reoccurrences of same accidents.
  2. It will help us improve our knowledge about safety awareness.
  3. This gives good understanding and promotes good relationship with other officer.
  4. Very useful for us to have this workshop regularly.
  5. It will enhance every crew awareness and knowledge regarding present and future company prospects.
  6. We learn on other experiences of participants and sharing ideas will help us.
  7. This is good for motivation and upgrading in order to maintain safety operation.
  8. This will benefit us and share ideas to other officer onboard.
  9. This will help improve management level officer on different aspects.
  10. We learn ideas that we can use onboard.

President Conrado N. Dela Cruz delivered the closing remarks as he salute and appreciates all the Officers who attended the program.

This will not end here; SMD will continue to conduct Workshop Meetings in order to remind our Officers that the Safety Operation of our Vessels is our ultimate goal and the key for MAGMOL’s success!
